The day camp program welcomes children aged 4 to 12 for adventures in outdoor exploration, cooking, games, and crafts. For children ages 4 to 6 there\'s WINGS (Waterville Instruction in Nature and Games), a hands-on program ideal for kids with lots of energy. Children aged 7 to 9 will SOAR (Summer Outdoor Adventures in Recreation) through a variety of outdoor excursions such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, and organized games. PEAK (Positive Environmental Activities for Kids) will lead kids aged 10 to 12 on adventures in a variety of natural areas in the southern White Mountains, from hiking to remote swimming holes to kayaking on Corcoran's Pond, along with unique cooking and crafts.
This summer, each week\'s activities will revolve around themes that include Pirate Week, Hero's Week (on July 4), Sports Week, Animal Week, Curiosity Week, and more. Half-day specialty camps are also available for children with a special interest in soccer, karate, science, or acting. Other day camp add-ons include before and after camp care, swim lessons, field trips, and transportation.
All day camp programs run Monday to Friday for a full 10 weeks, from June 25 to August 31, 2007, 9 AM to 4 PM. Activities will take place at the Waterville Valley recreation center and at locations around the valley. Half day options are available for the WINGS and SOAR programs.
In addition to its day camp program, Waterville Valley\'s recreation department offers a full slate of activities for children and adults, including bingo, ice cream socials, sports of all kinds, yoga, cooking, crafts, and more. The center\'s \"open gym\" program provides a cool place to play on a hot summer day, and a multipurpose room hosts events on rainy days. There\'s even theater under the stars, with Shakespeare in the Valley presenting the bard\'s works against the backdrop of the granite mountains. \"This place gets a lot of use,\" says Stephanie Gardner, Waterville\'s recreation director.
The recreation department will also host a number of special community events for all ages. On June 30th, it\'s Family Play Day, with traditional fun including a Fireman's BBQ, watermelon toss, giant obstacle course and a pie-eating contest. Paws on Packard's Field on July 19 features events especially for dogs and their people, and a Community Lau with tiki torches, live music and good food will light up the valley on August 21.
This summer, Waterville Valley is the place to be for family fun and recreation. For more information about Waterville Valley\'s kids camps or other programs, contact the recreation department at 603-236-4695 or e-mail wvrecreation@watervillevalley.org.
